Raising A Child Made Easier For Single Parents

Posted by admin - July 18th, 2011

Becoming a single parent isn’t something most people plan for, but it’s a situation more and more people are finding themselves in nowadays. While it’s much more socially acceptable to be a single parent today than a few decades ago, that doesn’t change the fact that it can still be quite difficult. It is even harder than ever, while living in these difficult economic times. As we’ll see in this article, however, being a single parent doesn’t have to be a disaster for either you or your child.

If you need professional help, never be afraid to ask, even when it is for your child. There is often a painful situation, such as a death or divorce, associated with being a single parent, and this can be hard for everyone involved. Too often, the single parent has enough problems, and doesn’t always think about the situation through the eyes of the child. If you notice changes in your child, at home or school, it might be a good idea to consider counseling. It is most important to think of your child, but in this situation you probably need help, also. Quite often you will need more than the help of your friends or your family. In many instances, transition to the single life will go smoother when you and your child have counseling. When you become a single parent a change of career may also be in order. Sometimes, what you need is an actual career. As a single parent, some jobs will meet your needs more exactly than others. If your children get home from school by 3, a typical 9 to 5 schedule would not work. An occupation, such as nursing or other medical fields, provide flexible hours which help greatly. Online marketing, writing, graphics, and web design provide the opportunity to work at home. A flexible schedule and a reliable source of income are two pivotal areas you should look for in a job when you are a single parent.

Single parents seem to do one of two things, either neglect the child, or neglect themselves, so remember your own needs sometimes. Being alone to recharge the batteries, along with times of relaxation are needed by everyone, especially a single parent. Finding time for yourself is not always easy, but when you make plans, and are willing to leave your children, it can be done. Enlisting a family member for childcare, or perhaps one of your friends as a babysitter, so you can get away for some time to regroup without your child. Depending on whether you would unwind better by yourself or with a friend, you could go to an afternoon movie alone or otherwise, or meet a friend for coffee.

Raising a child has become easier in some ways, because there is much more support for helping single parents make decisions about issues as important as financial problems. A helpful support group can be created easily, because finding others in the same situations shouldn’t be too tough, since there are so many single parents today. Even when your situation seems hopeless, it still is better to keep your eyes on the best things possible, than worrying about your problem.
